Somatic Art Therapists have the best of both worlds as they hold knowledge from both Art Therapy and Somatic Experiencing. Art Therapists are educated in materials, media and processes of art exploration while Somatic Trauma Therapists assist individuals to track sensation within the body. A Somatic Art Therapist helps individuals recognize they have the ability to heal themselves. The materials used in the session assist individuals to listen carefully their impulses and become aware of what is needed in the moment, to essentially become present to experience.
The concept of attention and its ability to become intention is essential. The process of a Somatic Art Therapist is to notice the body, what its wants and needs are and how to use attention to resolve this inner conflict. Attention is powerful, and it has influence on how we think, behave and interact. Mindful practice invites us to be stimulated through the art, becoming aware of sensation in the body and to be playful in the moment.
Those whom are living with complex trauma are constantly assessing outside of themselves to ensure their own safety. Our biological response is to rationalize and assess for our safety. Trauma physiology is loud, it is overwhelming, scary and it leaves us feeling tired. Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy is focused on rebuilding neurological pathways and to establish an internal sense of safety. Art, movement, music, dance and touch are vehicles to assist in this process to improve the individual's quality of life.
